IMPACTING STRONG ACADEMIC VALUES IN THE YOUNGER GENERATION BY BREAKING THE FEAR OF MATHEMATICS.

I started attending the Global Leadership Summit about 8 years ago at my church (House of Grace) in Lagos, Nigeria. Prior to my first GLS, all I wanted to be was a chartered accountant, I had the desire to be the Accountant General of the Federation this drove me to apply for several professional courses but it all changed when I attended my first GLS in October 2012. One of the speakers spoke directly to me when she said so passionately that we must be people that add value and contribute to other people’s lives and the community. I left the summit, pondering on how I could immediately act on what I had just heard. Then, I decided that since I am great with figures, I can use it to make a difference. As at that time, I had come across students of primary and secondary schools that had difficulties with mathematical problems and I felt I could help them break this fear. So in May 2013, I held the first OSE YOUNG TALENT BRAIN QUEST with about 80 people in attendance.
The Ose Brain Quest Foundation is an educational initiative committed to impacting strong academic values in young people by providing the platform where the creative and logical capacities of students can be stimulated and developed particularly for those in primary and secondary levels of both private and public schools. After the first edition, I resolved that this is what I want to spend my time and energy doing- impacting the younger generation by imparting them with the skills and the tools to build strong academic values.

From the GLS teachings, I have learnt grit and how to be courageous even in the midst of difficulties. In the beginning, I thought it would be easy since it was an educational initiative. It would be warmly welcomed but this was not the case. Schools were turning me down, even getting approval from the Government proved more difficult but I did not give up. As people began to see the progress I was making, then they began to join me and today we have a team working on all our projects. Organisations and individuals began to sponsor the competition, schools that started calling to be a part of the quest and now I am in final stages of getting approval with the government. Today the story has changed. From 1 mental quest with 80 students in attendance, we have grown to hosting 2 competitions- Ose Brain Quest and Smart Competition annually and at the last edition in 2019 we had over 1000 students in attendance from about 35 schools. We have also given several scholarships and awards and we provide extra after school classes for stude

his year, 2020 we will have the 10th edition and we know it will be even bigger. The GLS has enabled my team and I to aid the mental development of students thereby giving them a comparative advantage while helping the child to discover their creative abilities (self- assessment skill). As an individual, it has sharpened my teaching career skills by inspiring me to be better at what I do. In a nutshell, the GLS helped me to teach students on how to eliminate the fear of mathematics and it has given them the opportunity to express knowledge and have outstanding academic performance. I am so glad that I attended GLS in 2012, it has given me a fulfilling vision. I am passionate about adding value to the younger generation and I am always looking forward to the summit so that I can receive more knowledge to keep me on my mission. We strongly believe that every child is a champion and has influence, so when you invest in education, you invest in all.
